Canton Dog Park Opens To Public

CANTON (WWJ) - The gates to the new Canton Dog Park will officially open to the public on Friday, May 20 starting at 8:30 am.

The five acre off-leash dog park is located on Denton Road just north of Cherry Hill Road and across from Canton Fire Station #3.

Dog-lovers are encouraged to register their four-legged friends and take advantage of the site amenities.

The park is completely fenced in so Fido won't get lost. Plus, its divided into a large dog section for animals over 20 pounds and small dog section for animals under 20 lbs to ensure a positive tail-wagging experience for everyone.

This fenced-in area will allow dogs to run free and play allowing for socialization and recreation in a safe environment.

Canton's new Dog Park also features an enclosed space with a double-gated entry which will be kept locked when the park is not open. Hours of operation are from dawn to dusk.

Of course, there are some rules and restrictions everyone must follow. Users must be 18-years-old or under the supervision of an adult, dogs must be leashed when entering or exiting the fenced-in area and visitors must be prepared to clean up after their dogs. Click here to read all the rules.

Some requirements also must be met before your dog can be registered. All dogs must be at least four months old and licensed in the County in which they reside. Owners must also provide current vaccination records. Click here to read all membership requirements.

The dog park is the culmination of almost three years of work by the Friends of the Canton Dog Park, which was formed with a mission to help fundraise to create an off-leash dog park in the Canton Community. In addition, grants from Wayne County were also utilized to create this five acre dog park.

Although great progress has been made in preparing the Dog Park for its opening, a few projects are still in the works. With the soggy spring, installation of the landscaping, a permanent driveway and parking lot are still be finalized. As a result, the grand opening celebration will be postponed until later in the summer.

Registration tags for up to three dogs per household can be purchased from Canton Township Clerk's Office, 1150 S. Canton Center, for an annual fee of $25 for Canton residents and $50 for non-residents. Click here for a license form/Dog Park registration.
