Detroit Recreation Department Hosts Kids Fishing Derby

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Recreation Department and Hook, Line and Sinker, Inc. will host the 15th annual Detroit Area Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lake Frances, on the south side of Palmer Park between Woodward and Third Street.

The derby is free for children to participate. However, participants must furnish their own equipment, natural bait and be accompanied by an adult.

"This event has offered thousands of Detroit area young people a positive first fishing experience," Alicia C. Minter, Detroit Recreation Department Director said in a statement.

"The fishing tips and assistance they receive from staff and volunteers, in addition to the well stocked lake, combine for a great day of fishing for our youth," Minter continued.

The derby is divided into morning and afternoon sessions. Each session will consist of the first 500 youth registered.

Morning session registration is at 9 am and derby time is from 10 am to 11:30 am.

Afternoon session registration is at noon and the derby time is from 1 pm to 2:30 pm.

Prizes will be awarded at the end of each session.
