Fight Back Against Math Anxiety!

Getting kids to like math can be struggle. Even in elementary school, many students develop anxiety about math, and can get nervous when presented with a math problem.

Studies have shown that to fight math anxiety, students need teachers who also like math. In a study of first and second grade classrooms, female 1st and 2nd grade teachers with high anxiety about math affected both their students' math performance and their beliefs about math ability.

Researchers found no difference in the performance of boys and girls in math at the beginning of the year. By the end of the school year, however, girls taught by a teacher with high math anxiety started to score lower than boys in math.
