40 Laptops Stolen From Detroit Middle School

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police are looking for thieves they say swiped computers from a Detroit school.

School officials say it was sometime between Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening that someone broke into Law Academy Middle School on Detroit's east side and stole a number of laptops.

"We had probably about 40 laptops and other electronic equipment that was stolen," said Law Academy principal Jeffrey Nelson. At least one projector was also taken from the school, near Outer Drive and Van Dyke Ave.

Nelson said, at least initially, there were no suspects.

"But it was pretty systematic how it was done; pretty well thought out," he said.

Detroit Public Schools Police Chief Roderick Grimes said the glass doors were shattered on 18 classrooms. He is asking to public to keep their eyes and ears open for information that may help police find those responsible.

"For so many years, our district was a little bit behind many districts... and now we had the opportunity to get this technology in to kind of help them get up to speed. And to have someone come take it from them kind of throws them further behind the ball. So we're only hurting our young kids here," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detroit Police. You can also leave an anonymous tip on the CrimeStoppers hotline at 1 (800) SpeakUp.
