DETROIT (WWJ) – There is still hope for a big eyesore on the northern boundary of Detroit.

More than five years ago, developers of the so-called “Gateway Project” promised to bring major retailers back to the city.  Since then, the weeds have grown tall on the property on Woodward Ave. at Eight Mile Road.

But, developer Marvin Beatty now says Meijer and Marshalls are on their way to the D. He said they’ll break ground on a new shopping center this fall.

“People are signed up. They’re signing up.  The project is moving and we are finally at a point where the Gateway Project will come to realization,” Beatty said.

In the meantime, Beatty is promising to clean up the property and pay the back taxes.
