Flooding Buckles Train Tracks In Ann Arbor

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - City officials are calling it an "embankment failure." The railroad tracks that run parallel to Plymouth Road in Ann Arbor have buckled as a result of a mudslide.

WWJ's Chrystal Knight spoke with Sgt. Ed Dreslinski, director of operations for Ann Arbor Emergency Management.

"We had some erosion to it before, and then a large amount of rain in a short amount of time caused that gravel and dirt to give way underneath the railroad tracks," Dreslinski said.

A notice posted on the city's website said Plymouth Road was closed between Barton Drive and Broadway while crews work to clear both lanes after the embankment failure occurred late Wednesday night due to heavy rain. The work is expected to take most of the day to complete, the notice said.

"As soon as we reallized what had happend last night, out communications notified Ann Arbor Railroad, notified them of the danger.  And they ceased all traffic and rerouted at that point," Dreslinski said.

Dreslinski said that particular railroad track is non-commercial, used for freight only.

Traffic is being detoured from Huron Parkway to Glazier Way; Glazier to Fuller Road; Fuller Road to Glen Avenue and Glen to Huron Street.

There was no immediate word on when the tracks would be fixed.
