Wayne County Under Water

DETROIT (WWJ) - Which areas have been hardest hit by the flooding? In Wayne County, Homeland Security Director James Buford says the damage was widespread.

"That's kinda hard to say.  The city of Detroit received a lot of water. Western Wayne county and some portions of downriver did. So, it's kind of all over," he said.

Southeast Michigan remains under a flood warning until midnight, as Metro Detroiters deal with flooded basements and backyards following Wednesday's rain.

Buford said some local roads were still flooded out on Thursday.

"Probably only about half that there were last night... many of them are still covered, but passable," he said.

What should people do if they have a flooded home or basement?

"The first thing people should do people should do is contact their insurance company to see if there's coverage through their homeowners insurance company or rental insurance if they have that, to cover their possessions and the damage that might have occurred. If not, they're going to possibly have to work with the local Red Cross to see if they may be able to get some help there," Buford said.

Buford expects it will take a couple of weeks before all the flood damage can be cleaned up.   And while the flooding is bad,  Buford does not think Southeast Michigan will qualify for state or federal assistance.
