Man Struck, Killed While Looking For Lost Dog

KAWKAWLIN TWP. (WWJ/AP) - The Bay County sheriff's office says a man was struck and killed by a vehicle as he searched for his missing dog late at night. WSGW-AM reports deputies are looking for the driver who left the scene of Thursday's fatal accident.

Police say 64-year-old Richard Lesniak was struck by a sport utility vehicle or pick-up truck just before 10:30 p.m. in Kawkawlin Township.

Lesniak was looking for his dog, which had run loose.

Investigators have recovered a black mirror that apparently was broken off the vehicle.

According to a report released earlier this week by Transportation for America, between 2000 and 2009, 1,468 people were killed while walking in Michigan. This is a share of the more than 47,700 Americans who died while walking on our nation's streets.
