Lions Coach Schwartz Picks Defensive Line Nickname

DETROIT (WWJ) - After sorting through the "overwhelming response" to a contest he posted on Twitter to nickname the Detroit Lions' defensive line, head coach Jim Schwartz has finally announced the winner: "Silver Crush."

Last week, Schwartz tweeted, "I've heard a lot of people suggesting names for the Lions' front four. Send your ideas. Whoever has the best, gets an autographed fball."

On Wednesday, Schwartz tweeted, "My favorite (and winner of the football) goes to: "Silver Crush." Acknowledges tradition/history of "Silver Rush" with slight update."

He's talking about the 1980s defensive line, which was led by Bubba Baker and Doug English, known as the "Silver Rush."

Schwartz said over 100 people nominated the winning title, so he's going to draw a name out of a hat to determine the winner of the autographed football.

A close second was the "Disassembly Line." The most original was "Ghost & Darkness," the names given to the two man-eating lions that terrorized rail workers in Kenya in 1898.

Other notable contenders were "Non-stop Motors," "Detroit Pride," "Blue Thunder," "Motown Madmen," "Ferocious Four," "Uncaged Rage" and the "Pain Gang."

While Schwartz thinks the new title fits the line, he said "time will tell if it "sticks"… don't want to force it."
