Day Of Celebration For Survivors Of Cancer
ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - Sunday is Cancer Survivor's Day and there will be celebrations throughout Metro Detroit. The head of oncology services at Beaumont Hospital, Dr. Adil Akhtar says they'll have a picnic for survivors at Beaumont.
"When they beat cancers and live for a long time, they are living with some kind of complications and physical side effects, so we take care of their physical needs, their emotional needs, their financial needs," says Akhtar.
"We celebrate our patients and their fight against the cancer. We also celebrate their caregivers and family members who support them through the fight through the cancer and we also celebrate the doctors, nurses, and other providers who treat our patients," Akhtar says.
Akhtar says they're making great strides against cancer, with more than 11 million cancer survivors in the U.S. alone.
"Now, we have more than 11 million survivors living in this country and many, many more millions all throughout the world . And it has been made possible by the research, dedication, and courage of the patients and their treating physicians and scientists," notes Akhtar.
