Detroit Police Officer Struck By Wrong-Way Driver

GREEKTOWN (WWJ) - A Detroit police officer was hit while on duty in Greektown Saturday night. WWJ's Beth Fisher reporting from the scene, says that things were pretty quiet in Greektown Sunday, near the Greektown Casino Hotel where the officer was struck.

The veteran policeman was walking his beat and crossing the street at Monroe and St. Antoine when he was hit by a driver heading the wrong way. The officer is being treated at an area hospital. There's no word on the extent of his injuries.

Beth spoke with Detroit police officer Steven Shank, who was on patrol in the area.

"Well, it's very concerning," Shank told Beth.  "As Detroit police officers, we have a job down here where we watch over the citizens of the city of Detroit, and people that come from your suburban areas, and it's unfortunate when you do have something like this happen."  Shank also asked for prayers for the officer who was hit.

The driver, who's from New York, has been arrested. No word as to what charges he may face.
