So, after years wronged by being relegated to the Western Conference, circumstances recently twisted toward the Red Wings’ favor.

The Atlanta Thrashers are moving to Winnipeg. After next season, they will move to the Western Conference, leaving a spot open for the Red Wings in the Eastern Conference.

All that’s left is for NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to do the right thing.

Therein lies the issue. “Gary Bettman” and “the right thing” don’t generally belong in the same sentence.

And it’s time for Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch to call out Bettman if he doesn’t do the right thing.

Every year at the Stanley Cup final, Bettman sits before the media and answers questions. Of course, he was asked about the Red Wings’ moving to the Eastern Conference recently. Naturally, he tap-danced around the question like Gregory Hines. Sure, he mentioned the Red Wings — but as only one of three possibilities. Nashville and Columbus are the others.

It’s sacrilegious. Another sign the Red Wings are abused and taken for granted by the NHL.
