Residents Pack A Bunch For Troops Over Seas

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP (WWJ)- A group of Metro Detroiters filled boxes on Tuesday to send to United States troops in the Middle East during a packing party in Bloomfield Township.

For several hours, a few dozen metro area residents gathered together in the Bloomfield Township City Hall Auditorium to pack boxes for men and women serving in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Pat Thomas, Social Chair for the Bloomfield Republican Women's Club, lead the annual event.

When asked why it was so critical to hound such projects like these, Thomas said, "Well, my husband was in Vietnam, and he said 'Tell Daddy, I didn't get any packages when I was there!'  So I said okay, we're making up for it."

The priority boxes contain a variety of items, from powdered beverage mixes, to snacks and wet wipes, socks, neck coolers, dog biscuits, and a lot more.  Postage is covered through donations.

Also taking part in the packing party for the first time was Marge Mancuso.

"It's awesome," said Mancuso.  "It really is exciting.  Isn't this wonderful?  So many people and so many things for all those people who are helping us."

Mancuso wanted to take part because she has a young relative who is now serving in the Middle East.

"I have a nephew over in Iraq," said Mancuso.  "He just got there so it's my way of saying 'Thank you' to him and all of his buddies."

Astonished, Mancuso didn't realize she could also address these packages to certain people, such as her nephew.

"I was just going to help anybody who needed help because he's got a lot of family support.  Maybe there are young men that don't," said Mancuso.
