MSU Raises Undergraduate Tuition By 6.9 Percent

GRAND RAPIDS (AP) - Michigan State University trustees have voted to raise tuition rates for the 2011-12 academic year. The trustees met Friday in Grand Rapids at the Secchia Center, home of Michigan State's College of Human Medicine.

The university says tuition and fees will increase by 6.9 percent for resident undergraduate students and 7 percent for all others. That translates to a $788 increase for an in-state undergraduate student taking a full schedule of classes.

On Thursday, the University of Michigan regents voted to increase tuition and fees by 6.7 percent for in-state undergraduates and 4.9 percent for out-of-staters.

The state's budget includes incentives for universities that don't raise tuition by more than 7.1 percent. Michigan universities appear to be keeping increases below that threshold.
