Two Lenawee Co. Sheriff's Deputies Injured In Crash

CAMBRIDGE TOWNSHIP (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say two Lenawee County sheriff's deputies were injured when motorcycles they were riding collided while doing traffic enforcement.

The department said the crash happened Thursday night in Lenawee County's Cambridge Township, about 60 miles southwest of Detroit.

Deputy Christopher VanDyke and Deputy Christopher Johnston were riding on motorcycles and were attempting to make a turn when one motorcycle hit the other one.

The sheriff's department said the deputies were transported to University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor for treatment.

Sheriff Jack Welsh said VanDyke was released from the hospital Friday morning and Johnston remained in the hospital for observation.

The accident, which happened not far from Michigan International Speedway in Jackson, is being investigated by Michigan State Police. Lieutenant Jeff Ewald explained why MSP is involved in the investigation.

"It's better to have an impartial agency handle the investigation, as opposed to us doing our own officers," Ewald said.
