Group Calls For Investigation Of Shuttered Crime Lab

DETROIT (WWJ) - A group of protesters is taking aim at the Detroit Crime Lab.

The Detroit People's Task Force rallied outside Congressman John Conyers' office downtown, Tuesday, hoping that the congressman will launch a federal investigation into what they say are errors committed within the crime lab.

"We're gonna hold more demonstrations. We're gonna have a town hall meeting. We're not going anywhere," said Kevin Carey, Executive Director of the Task Force.

"We're gonna plan other events and other strategies, political strategies to win what we want, and that's a federal investigation of the crime lab," he said.

A number of members in the group claim their loved ones have been wrongfully convicted because of mistakes made by the lab, which is now controlled by the Michigan State Police.

"John Conyers, you can't keep dodging this," said protester Roberto Gousmond. "There were federal investigations when crime labs unraveled in Boston. There were federal investigations when crime labs unraveled in Dallas. What's so unique about Detroit?"

WWJ Newsradio 950 has a call in for comment to Congressman Conyers' office.
