Council Rejects Bing's Budget; What's Next?

DETROIT (WWJ) - "The time for talk is over. I will administer the budget approved by council." That's the reaction from Mayor Dave Bing, after the Detroit City Council rejects his proposed amendments to the city budget. So now what?

According to WWJ's City Beat Reporter Vicki Thomas, the finger pointing now begins as Bing warns residents to brace for some devastating cuts by Friday, the start of the new fiscal year. Bing blames the city council for rejecting his plan to restore $30 million to the budget; some council members blame the mayor, saying he's being irresponsible and should come back to the table with a better plan.

But Bing says the time for talking is over. He's meeting with department heads to finalize cuts, which could include the layoff of police and firefighters, the elimination of Sunday bus service and the end of festivals at Hart Plaza.

WWJ Newsradio 950 and CBS Detroit.com will continue to follow this story and will provide details on any new developments when, and if, they occur.
