Police Crack Down On Illegal Fireworks

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee tells WWJ that officers will be out and about this weekend enforcing laws against the sale of illegal fireworks, but they also need the public's help.

"We absolutely enforce and take a look at that," Godbee said. "But quite frankly, the proliferation of those types of items, you can drive down to Ohio and get it very easily so from that standpoint, from an enforcement standpoint, I mean, we enforce when its brought to our attention."

Godbee also said officers will deal with people pushing illegal fireworks on a precinct by precinct basis, but they need the help of the city's citizens to alert them to illegal activity.

Unfortunately, every year the department sees people injured as a result of shooting off illegal and dangerous fireworks.

Godbee said parents can help too, by taking their kids to fireworks that are put on by the pros

"You really, really need responsible adults to really just, you know, take a look. Come to an authorized fireworks, where professionals are controlling it."
