MACKINAW CITY (AP) – Authorities say a 19-year-old man who was apparently was trying to reach St. Ignace or Mackinac Island by canoe has died.
The Emmet County sheriff’s department says Jacob Greaves of Saline was found unresponsive by the U.S. Coast Guard on Monday afternoon west of the Mackinac Bridge.

He was taken to a marina in Mackinaw City, where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s department says Greaves apparently left a family campsite in Emmet County’s Wawatam Township, near Mackinaw City, by canoe about 4 a.m. Monday.

The death was under investigation pending the results of an autopsy.
