Pat Caputo: Red Wings Have Avoided Going Overboard In Free Agency, Finding Right Pieces Instead
Initially, the beginning of the free agent signing period was flat for the Red Wings.
They needed help on defense and at the point on the power play. Christian Erhoff, who played so well for Vancouver last season, was the perfect fit. Yet, free agency hardly began last weekend — and he was gone, receiving a ridiculous 10-year, $40 million contract from Buffalo.
James Wisniewski is a local kid from Canton, who played his junior hockey for the Plymouth Whalers. He is a right-handed shot, which was badly needed by the Red Wings at the point of their power play now that Brian Rafalski has retired. Although not a big defenseman, Wisniewski is rather feisty. Not sure if he wouldn’t have been an even better fit for the Red Wings than Erhoff.
Wisniewski got six years for $33 million from Columbus. Wow.
