Fate Of Pit Bulls Rests In Judge's Hands

RAISINVILLE TWP. (WWJ) - The Monroe County Prosecutor will square off against a pit bull rescue group Friday over the fate of four dogs confiscated during a raid of a suspected dog fighting ring. Twenty-seven people were arrested and face charges from the March raid.

Assistant Prosecutor Michael Brown said the dogs are a threat and should be put down.

"They were brought up in an environment around dog fighting and probably come from a breeding line of fighting dogs," Brown said. "The Sheriffs Department believes that these dogs are a danger to the community and if they're placed in neighborhoods, they may attack people or other dogs."

A pit bull rescue group called the Buster Foundation wants custody of the dogs so they can adopt them out. The group believes the dogs can be rehabilitated and reintroduced to society as behaved family companions.

Ultimately, after hearing testimony, the Monroe County District Court Judge will decide whether or not the dogs pose a threat to public safety and/or have a useful purpose. If the judge rules the pit bulls do not pose a specific threat to society, they will be permitted to live. If not, the dogs would likely be euthanized.
