Debate Among Parties As To Effect Of Governor's Economic Policy

LANSING (WWJ) - The impact of Governor Rick Snyder's economic policy is under some debate between both parties in the Michigan Senate.

WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick reports that the disagreement takes place even though the budget cuts have yet to take effect.

Senate Majority Leader (R) Randy Richardville talks about the boost to the economy the budget tax cuts will bring to the state of Michigan, especially the 1.7 billion dollar business tax cuts.

Richardville credits the governor with an increase in confidence in the business sector ... which he feels will generate more jobs.

"Now that it looks like we are going to have a more conservative agenda, we're going to have a better tax structure, we're going to reduce some of the burdens that are in Michigan ... we should take another look at it, and the confidence in Michigan started to change," said Richardville, during an interview on Public Radio.

Democrats do not agree that the business tax cuts will decrease the unemployment rate or hold the promise of creating any jobs said Senate (D) Leader Gretchen Whitmer during an interview on Public Radio.

"He can't point to one study that says this policy is going to yield a single job, when you look at all the bills he and his colleagues have sent to the governor ...not one can he point to that creates a job, unless you are pointing to emergency financial managers; those are not the kind of jobs that are going to grow Michigan out of our economic recession," said Whitmer.
