Charges Coming In Beating Of Elderly Woman

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit man accused of beating an elderly woman faces home invasion and assault charges.

Police say 50-year old Christopher Elledge is expected to appear in court, Thursday, for formal arraignment on the charges which also include unarmed robbery and larceny.

Security video captured 70-year old Annie Smith being punched and robbed in her apartment building hallway.

The video, released earlier this month, shows the victim opening an outside door allowing the man inside the building before she is attacked. Smith was punched at least twice in the face – once while sprawled across the floor.

Elledge allegedly is the man seen walking away with personal items and cash.

"In a civilized society we expect that our citizens will be able to go about their day doing their everyday business," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, in a statement.

"Instead this senior citizen came back to her home from shopping and was viciously attacked and treated like a human punching bag," she said.

A court appearance originally set for Wednesday was rescheduled for Thursday at 1 p.m. 36th District Court.
