Men Injured After Colliding With Train

HOWELL TWP. (WWJ) - Two Fowlerville men are recovering at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing after the car they were in struck a train.

The accident happened around 6:00 pm Tuesday, when a 2010 Dodge Challenger struck a west-bound CSX train in Howell Township.

According to Michigan State Police, the train eventually stopped about eight miles later in Handy Township. The train's engineer, whose name is being withheld, told police he has no idea of what occurred behind him. The Grand Rapids-bound train was hauling 134 cargo cars and the Challenger collided with car number 30.

The driver, 17-year-old Nathan Wilkinson-Pedersen, and his passenger, 22-year-old Zachary Kissel, were transported by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

Police believe speed was a factor in the crash. Wilkinson-Pedersen was cited for careless driving.
