Dispute Over Game Leads To Deadly Shooting

DEARBORN (WWJ) - It was supposed to be a regular game of basketball, but the game ended with a fatal shooting in Dearborn.

Speaking to WWJ, Police Lieutenant Patricia Penman told what happened at a basketball game at Riverside Academy on Schaefer Road.

"Upon arrival, officers found that there was a victim at the scene and that they also placed a suspect under arrest at that time," Penman said. "A preliminary investigation indicated that an altercation took place on the basketball court and the situation escalated. At some point during that escalation, the suspect produced a firearm and shot the victim multiple times. The victim did die as a result of the injuries sustained."

According to investigators, at some point during the altercation, the 35-year-old suspect grabbed a gun and shot the 23-year-old victim multiple times.

"Everybody at the Dearborn Police Department, our hearts go out to the family of the victim," Penman said. "There's just no reason for someone to bring a gun to a fight. There's no reason for people to be fighting, but to bring a gun out in a situation like this, it  just puts so many people in danger and as we see in this case, the victim died."

Police have not said what type of gun was used. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office will now determine what charges to bring against the suspect. Charges could be filed as early as Thursday.

As the investigation is ongoing, anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Dearborn Police Tip line at 313-943-3093.
