It happened just before 11 a.m., Monday.

Michigan State Police have sent two canine units to the scene, and two other patrol cars to continue pursuit of the suspects.

WWJ's Pat Sweeting spoke with Shakira D. whose grandmother lives in the area where the officer was responding to a report of a break-in.

"I heard a big, loud noise like someone had swerved and jumped over the  curb. That's what woke me up. When I woke up I heard the ambulance and things like that coming; looked out the window that's when I seen police car, ambulance, fire trucks -- everywhere," she said.

A hospital spokeswoman said the 21-year veteran, who's in his 40's, remained hospitalized in stable condition Monday afternoon.

His name has not been released.
