Cooling Biz Thrives In Heavy Heat

BLOOMFIELD HILLS (WWJ) - One hundred calls a day -- that's how many are coming into the offices of Sun Heating and Cooling in Bloomfield Hills as a week-long heat wave hovers over Metro Detroit.

Owner Henry Abrams says it can take anywhere from two hours to two days to get a repair person out. 

"What we try to tell the customers is, right now, like today is Tuesday, we're probably booking into tomorrow late or Thursday. But we're always getting cancellations or guys, our techs, are getting done sooner expected ... since we have some many trucks on the road, we're maybe able to fill in jobs as they call in," said Abrams.

Often, Abrams said, there are things homeowners can do to get their unit going.

"We're telling them to please check their furnace filters, check the breakers, check the thermostats to make sure that they're in the right mode," he said. 

"And, most importantly, check the condenser outside, due to such a wet May that we had and so much rain, the cottonwood is real bad this year," Abrams said, adding that a good hosing down can sometimes take care of that problem.

Abrams says there have been so many calls for service, he has a crew working the overnight shift.

The hot, humid weather is sticking around Metro Detroit all week – with temps expected to stay in the mid-90s. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory, in effect until Thursday evening.
