DETROIT (WWJ) – The extreme heat has been causing miserable conditions inside 102 schools in Detroit that don’t have air conditioning.

That’s why those buildings and two that offer adult education shut just after noon, Wednesday, and will be closed all day Thursday as well. Summer school is a popular program in the Detroit district, about half the student population some 35,000 students, are enrolled.

Class will still be on at more than a dozen newer buildings that do have air. They’ll also take in the students from any older buildings that are attached to them.

Meantime, the district has opened 13 cooling centers in schools to assist families and the general public during the heat wave hitting the Midwest. The stations will be open today through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cooling stations are located in the gymnasiums, auditoriums, and/or cafeterias, when they are not in use. DPS will provide bottled water and fruit, and security will be on hand.
