Boy Drowns At Michigan Summer Camp

HAMILTON TWP. (AP) - Officials say a 15-year-old boy from Illinois has drowned while swimming to escape the heat at a summer camp in southwestern Michigan.

The Kalamazoo Gazette and WWMT-TV report the boy was swimming Wednesday at Lake of the Woods in Van Buren County's Hamilton Township when he went under water. Police say the boy was found after about 15 to 20 minutes, and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
The boy's name and hometown weren't immediately released.

Camp director Dayna Hardin says in a statement that the boy was participating in an organized swim at Greenwoods Camp for Boys to escape the heat. She says he was among about 15 campers being monitored by lifeguards and camp counselors.
The camp is located near Decatur, about 60 miles southwest of Grand Rapids.
