Outdoor Workers Coping With Extreme Heat

PORT HURON (WWJ) - With dangerously high temperatures expected Thursday, how do people who must work outside cope?

RSIG security company will have their guards on duty all weekend long at the Blue Water Festival. Daniel Minzey, company vice president, told WWJ's Chrystal Knight they took several steps to prepare in advance for the stifling heat.

"We really stocked up on a lot of bottled water," he said. "A lot of it came in the last two days so we had a tremendous amount, we got it all iced down, and we've got a number of people who are running around delivering water to people to make sure that they've got what they need and so that we're keeping them hydrated."

Minzey says he also supplies sunscreen to his guards and they often rotate so that no one is in one position for too long when the weather is threatening.

"Usually with keeping them hydrated, keeping the sunscreen on them and trying to rotate people into either some place that's air-conditioned from time to time or just get them into the shade. Usually, that's worked well for us in the past," he said.

Another advantage the security guards have at most of the outdoor venues they cover? Emergency responders like paramedics and firefighters are always on the premises.

An Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect through Thursday night.
