Oxford High School Installs 'Blue Turf' Football Field

OXFORD (WWJ) - Oxford High School is getting a case of the blues in this heat, but students are excited about it.

Athletic Director Mike Watson says a half-dozen workers are spending this week installing new navy blue Ford Field-like turf on the football field, but the heat is slowing them down a bit.

"With the weather the way it's been, it certainly is a challenge, but the crew's doing a great job.  They have to move a little bit slower than they normally would and stay hydrated and all those other things that people who work outside have to do these days," Watson said.

The "smurf-turf" is perfect for the school, as the Wildcat's colors are navy blue and gold. Watson said it will be ready in time for football season, and the field could even offer them a slight edge as opponents adjust to the unusual turf color.

"It will probably take, for teams that come in, it probably will take a few minutes to get used to the field, but it's definitely a home field advantage," he said.

The field was paid for thru fundraising efforts. If you would like to donate to the Oxford Wildcat Athletic Boosters Club, click here.
