Royal Oak's Ice Bar Melting In Scorching Heat

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - It's typically the coolest place to party in Royal Oak, with temperatures around 10 degrees and below year round. But, Fire and Ice, Metro Detroit's first ice bar, is melting.

"I've only cried a few times in my life, but I almost cried three days ago when I saw it. I was heartbroken to see it," the bar's owner, Luigi Cutraro told WWJ Newsradio 950's Kathryn Larson.

See what made Cutraro's heart break:

"This used to be all ice; the walls used to be ice; the ceiling used to be ice; the bar used to be ice ... We had a chair made of out ice; we had glasses made out of ice; everything in this room was ice," he said.

Cutraro said his 700-square-foot (formerly) solid-ice bar, located inside Sky Club above Sangria restaurant, is currently being featured on the Food Network.

Cutraro said his insurance won't pay up, so he's shelling out an estimated $6,000 for the re-freeze. "You know, they have to bring big cubes of ice over here, and then they have to sculpture it," he said.

Cutraro said he's hoping to have the chilly treat back up and running by mid-August.
