Detroit Council Finally Settles Groping Case

DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit City Council has agreed to pay $50,000 to settle a lawsuit that accused two male police officers of groping men.

The council's approval occurred Friday, less than a week before a federal judge wanted to see all council members in his Port Huron courtroom - 60 miles away - to ask them why it's taken so long to resolve the case.

Judge Lawrence Zatkoff had accused them of "deliberate indifference."

Two men say they were groped and assaulted by two male officers during a Detroit traffic stop in 2006. The city agreed to settle the case in March for $50,000, but formal approval took months.

The council also agreed to pay $21,500 to settle three similar lawsuits involving the same officers. The officers have denied wrongdoing.
