Birmingham Retailers Hold 'Day In The Town'

BIRMINGHAM (WWJ) - It's called a "Day in the Town" ... the time each year when retailers in downtown Birmingham hold a street party ... complete with discounted sales, live music and activities for kids.

In the case of some businesses, including Figo's Salon on Old Woodward, it's also an opportunity to help local charities, like Forgotten Harvest of Metro Detroit.

"There's a family out there,  right now that is not eating, or a little kid that's not getting food to eat, it's just devastating, so we wanted to do something that we can partnership with a company that's willing to help the community and do good," said Figo's owner Rino Marra.

Marra who is giving 10-percent of his take Saturday to Forgotten Harvest.

"In a county like Oakland County, you know, everyone thinks it such a wealthy county, that it's amazing to see how many people are not eating. The community comes in and gives to us on an everyday basis,  and it's the least we can do to help our community," said Marra.

The "Day on the Town" event, which also includes live music on the street and face painting for the kids, runs until 9 p.m. Saturday in downtown Birmingham.
