Habitat For Humanity Celebrating 25 Years With "Blitz Build"
DETROIT (WWJ) - Habitat for Humanity Detroit is kicking off its 25th anniversary "Blitz Build" in the Morningside Commons neighborhood on Detroit's east side on Monday.
Over the next three weeks, four homes will be completed by an army of volunteers, and that includes several sailors from the U.S.S. Michigan. The organization's executive director, Vincent Tilford, says the goal is to provide low-income working families with safe, affordable, energy-efficient housing.
"These houses are some of the most energy-efficient houses anywhere that you'll find," Tilford said. "For a year, a utility bill for one of our families may be about $1,100; that's electric and gas. All of our houses are going to be "visit-able," which means basically, if you have someone visiting you who's in a wheelchair, there's a no-step entrance into the home."
The houses also feature tank-less water heaters, low-flow toilets and energy-efficient lighting.
For those interested in home ownership, Habitat for Humanity is accepting applications.
