Detroit State Senator To Hold Facebook Town Hall

State Sen. Virgil Smith, D-Detroit, said Wednesday that he will hold a Facebook town hall meeting on Wednesday, Aug.10 at noon.  Anyone will have the opportunity to ask Sen. Smith questions and get a direct and immediate response.

"Michigan legislators need to use technology to communicate with their constituents and I'm excited about this Facebook town hall meeting," Smith said.

Anyone can go to Senator Virgil Smith's Facebook page at noon on Wednesday, August 10 and post a question or comment and Senator Smith will respond. Sen. Smith said he got the idea after reading about President Barack Obama's Twitter town hall meeting. (To 'friend' Smith, click here.)

"While Twitter is great for the President, I wanted to make sure that I had more than 140 characters to respond to the issues," Smith joked. (For the record, President Obama's spoken responses in his town hall didn't observe that limit either.)

It is believed that he is the first Michigan legislator to use Facebook for a town hall meeting.
