Former Detroit Cop Holds Fundraiser For Quadriplegic Son

DETROIT (WWJ) - A special fundraiser will be held Friday for Jamel Chubb, who was shot while pumping gas on Wyoming and 7 Mile last May. At age 21, he's a quadriplegic.

His mother Veronica Chubb, a retired Detroit Police Officer, told WWJ their outlook after the accident wasn't very positive. Her son was shot in the ear, neck and twice in the back. His second and third vertebrae were shattered and his spinal cord was bruised along with a series of strokes.

"They gave us no hope in the beginning. From the first diagnosis, they told us that he would be a vegetable."

Now, Chubb is trying to do everything she can to send her son to Cologne, Germany for special stem cell treatments.

"What we're trying to do at this time, is overseas they do the stem cell on a regular basis, but its traveling overseas so we're trying to get this stem cell treatments for my child. The total cost is about $250,000 and that's what we're trying to raise."

The fundraiser will be held at 6:00 Friday evening at the TULC Club, located at 8670 Grand River in Detroit.
