Coast Guard Searches For Missing Swimmer

CLAY TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Search efforts continue near Harsens Island for a person who is missing after taking a swim with a group of boaters in the St. Clair River Sunday night.

Don Chase of the U.S. Coast Guard Command Center in Detroit explained to WWJ what happened. "The missing person was going to help this one individual and he turned up missing. All the other persons returned to the boat without the one 23-year-old male," says Chase, "and we've been searching ever since," he adds.

Along with the Coast Guard, Chase says members of the St. Clair County Sheriff, Clay Township Fire and Rescue, Algonac Fire and Rescue, Canadian Coast Guard and St. Clair County Dive Team have been participating in the search and rescue in the area since the incident happened at 8pm on Sunday. The missing swimmer has only been identified as a 23-year-old man.

Chase says a fresh crew will arrive at daybreak, Monday, to continue the search efforts.
