No Snyder Recall On November Ballot

LANSING (WWJ) - The group organizing the campaign to recall Michigan Governor Rick Snyder says it will not meet this Friday's deadline to collect the 800,000 signatures needed to make the November ballot.

Tom Bryant, the Genesee County Coordinator of the Recall Snyder campaign, says the group is now focused on getting the measure on the February ballot.

Speaking to WWJ Newsradio 950 on Monday, Bryant was optimistic.

"We got off to a slow start because we didn't have a lot of media coverage. We couldn't buy advertising, that sort of a thing. July, and into early August we've built up to a very nice head of steam. And if we keep the momentum going where we are right now, into the next 30 to 60 days we should have our numbers," he said.

Bryant said even though interest in the campaign has admittedly waned, he expects a renewed interest next month.

"When people go back to school and find out that it costs twice what it was going to cost for their child to be in band, or maybe the music program has been eliminated completely, or athletic programs, the pay-to-play rate has doubled, their class sizes are getting larger, and the teacher they liked are now gone -- that's going to get a whole lot of people that are on the fence fired up again," he said.

Bryant said they 've already collected "about a third" of the signatures needed, or roughly 300,000.

The recall petition cites Gov. Snyder's support for increasing taxes on retirees and low-income workers while substantially cutting business taxes.

Snyder has said he's not bothered by the recall effort, saying it's "part of Democracy".

The deadline to make the February ballot is October 22.
