Jeff Riger: Mikel Leshoure Is Out For The Season

I know this sounds ridiculous but I think you may agree; the Lions are cursed! I know that I can find absolutely no scientific facts to back up that claim but think about...this team just has bad luck and it happened again on Monday morning at training camp. The team was doing an 11 on 11 drill and the next you know rookie, second round pick Mikel Leshoure was injured after Cliff Avril laid him out. Leshoure had to be carted off the field and about a hour later Jim Schwartz started his post practice presser with the news that his running back tore his Achilles tendon and is lost for the season.

Expect the Lions to go out now and try to find an experienced running back to fill the void of Leshoure. Names like Clinton Portis, Tiki Barber and Larry Johnson have already been talked about and I'm sure contacted by Detroit. After the practice Jahvid Best made sure to let everyone know that he considers himself an "every down" running back and the team will also have to lean on Mo Morris as well who is dealing with a broken hand.

Of course Leshoure is not the only player that has been plagued with injuries to start training camp. Defensive tackle first round pick Nick Fairley fractured his ankle while third round pick Titus Young has been dealing with a hamstring. Gosder Cherilus has found it hard to stay on the field for consecutive days after recovering from micro fracture surgery and Jeff Backus has missed time with a chest issue. Louis Delmas also broke his hand and missed some practices however he was back with the team today. So did I miss anybody? I might have!

So again, you just get the feeling that this team is cursed. I will spare you the bad memories by not bringing up about a thousand other reasons that could also lend credence to the Lions having the football Gods against them. Now by no means does any of this news mean that Detroit will not march on to the postseason like so many people predict, but it definitely doesn't help.

Watch the videos below of Jim Schwartz, Cliff Avril, Matt Stafford and Dominic Raiola below, all reacting to the news that Leshoure is lost for the season...
