ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan coach Brady Hoke seems to be setting the tone for how players in his program will be disciplined.

The day before leading the Wolverines in a preseason practice for the first time, Hoke announced receiver Darryl Stonum will be redshirted, punter Will Hagerup will be suspended for four games and receiver Terrence Robinson is suspended for the season opener.

“While it would be great to have Darryl on the field this season, we feel it is in his best interest and the best interest of our program for him to redshirt,” Hoke said Sunday night in a statement released by the school. “Darryl will continue to be an important part of our team and family. He has done everything we have asked him to do, but our number one priority is to help Darryl grow as a person.”

Stonum is on two years of probation for a reduced charge of operating while visibly impaired. He was ticketed for driving with a suspended license the day before being sentenced in June.

Stonum, a starter last year as a junior for Rich Rodriguez, had been suspended indefinitely from the team by Hoke. When Stonum was a freshman in 2008, he was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license. Stonum ended up in jail last summer because he didn’t comply with terms of his probation.

He has started 25 games in three seasons with 76 career catches for six touchdowns and 1,000-plus yards receiving. He also returned 62 kickoffs for an average of nearly 25 yards and a score.

Hagerup, the team’s No. 1 punter last year as a freshman, averaged 43.64 yards on punts to rank second in school history. Rodriguez suspended Hagerup last year against Ohio State for violating unspecified team rules. Robinson has caught a total of two passes in two seasons.

“In order to build a championship-caliber culture, you have to be accountable to each other on and off the field,” Hoke said. “There are expectations at the University of Michigan you must live up to.”

Michigan hosts Western Michigan on Sept. 3 in the first of five straight home games, which includes the first night game at the Big House against Notre Dame and is capped by the Big Ten opener against Minnesota with Hagerup eligible to play.
