AARP Holds Shredding Events In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - Since identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the country, AARP Michigan is inviting residents to bring old documents containing social security numbers, birth dates, account numbers, passwords and PINs to two shredding events in Detroit on Wednesday, Aug. 10.

A shredder will be available at the Hannan House, 4750 Woodward Avenue, until 2 pm and at Redford Lutheran Church, 22159 Grand River Avenue, from 3 pm to 7 pm.

"'Dumpster diving,' or going through trash cans is a common tactic used by identity thieves," Melissa Seifert, AARP Michigan Associate State Director for Financial Security, said in a written statement. "This shredding event is an opportunity to protect yourself from those who would steal your identity and your financial security."

Examples of documents to consider shredding include: ATM receipts; bank statements; employee pay stubs; birth certificate copies; medical and dental records; canceled and voided checks; credit reports; insurance and legal documents; tax forms; utility bills; investment, stock and property transactions; pre-approved credit card applications; and used airlines tickets and travel itineraries.

There is no need to register for these free events and residents of all cities and townships are invited to participate.
