Pharmacy Owner In Painkiller Fraud Case Remains In Jail Until Trial

DETROIT (WWJ) - A judge, concerned about cash sent overseas... refused to release a 49-year-old Canton Township pharmacy owner who is charged with leading a multimillion-dollar fraud ring involving prescription painkillers.

"Bob" Patel was ordered Friday by U.S. District Judge Arthur Tarnow to remain in jail until trial.

Patel, a native of India, is accused of defrauding Medicare and Medicaid of $60-million for painkillers that weren't necessary, or... in some cases, never even provided.  He allegedly wired roughly $500,000 to banks in India over the last six months.
