DETROIT (WWJ) – MSNBC will air a live discussion on strengthening America through education Sunday.  The second annual “Making the Grade” special will originate from the Detroit School of Arts, starting at noon.

MSNBC Anchor Tamron Hall will host the two-hour special.

“We’re looking for the concerns from the people in Detroit, the people in Michigan, including folks from the online community as well as the many email’s we’ve received, to expand this conversation beyond what we’ve been having for the past 20, 30 years. We know we need to improve education, but what are the realities?”

The discussion will bring together a roundtable of local and national leaders to discuss parenting and early education, and look for ways to help students compete globally.

“In some ways, Michigan and Detroit is ground zero.We have to start re-thinking how we teach our children and what goals we have for them. There’s a concept of everybody needs to go to a four-year college. Well, that may not be the case. What about vocational training? What are the options for somebody in a two-year program so that they can be trained?”

Hall said Detroit will serve as a perfect backdrop for the discussion.

“For me, I’ve read so much  in my research where people are comparing Detroit to New Orleans and that it took, sadly, Hurricane Katrina to decimate the city and the school district to be built up again.  Thankfully, we haven’t had that kind of catastrophe in Detroit, but we’ve had an economic catastrophe.”

The program airs from Noon until 2 p.m. Sunday, August 14, from the Detroit School of Arts.  Free tickets are available to the public, here.
