FERNDALE (WWJ) – An unofficial prelude to next weekend’s Woodward Dream Cruise, some 500 people took part Saturday in Ferndale’s Green Cruise.

The Sierra Club promotes an alternative means of getting around free of fossil fuels during the Green Cruise.

The Sierra Club’s website notes that three years ago, Michigan Sierra Club volunteer Shirley Bavonese had an idea—how about holding a “Green Cruise,” promoting non-motorized forms of transportation in a fun, creative way. “I wanted to create a way for people to celebrate their own natural energy, which doesn’t pollute or hurt lungs,” she says.

Most of the parade’s participants rode bikes, skateboards, roller skates, or simply walked to show the benefits of human-powered transportation.
