Police Are Just A Part Of The Solution Says Mayor

DETROIT (WWJ) - Sixteen people shot, and seven are dead during a weekend of gunfire in the city of Detroit.

Detroit police say they responded to nine shooting scenes in a 24 hour period that ended in bullets striking 15 individuals.

A 16th person was shot later in the day and died.

Mayor Dave Bing told WWJ last week that he's concerned about the spike in crime this summer.

"You know police officers are just a part of the solution, as our total community has to get involved, they've got to give the police department some information before something happens so we can stop it from happening," says Mayor Bing.

Bing says he is frustrated with the crime blotter in the city, which has the highest per capita murder rate, not seen in a decade.
