SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) – It’s a growing trend in the travel business – vacations for men, designed by men. They’re called “Man”cations – the male answer to the girl’s weekend. And there are plenty of Michigan destinations on the list.
It’s time to spend bonding with other guys whether it’s father and son, fraternity brothers or co-workers. And, James Hills, the founder of ManTripping – a website dedicated to man travel, says Michigan has a wealth of destinations. “The Detroit sports scene is something that I think is probably underrated,” says Hills. He says guys love the Michigan International Speedway and the Upper Peninsula is filled with hunting and fishing destinations.
“Just a little south of there, you’ve got the Traverse area with Sleeping Bear Dunes, the Grand Traverse Resort with great golf and, of course, you’ve got Fishtown if you want to go off on a fishing charter,” he says.
Hills adds there are also the lesser known destinations. “One of the coolest places, I think, is New Holland Brewing Company and Distillery and they actually have a ‘Hopquila’. It’s sort of like a tequila, but it’s actually made with hops,” he says. And then there’s Lark and Sons barbeque in Benton Harbor – part barbeque, part car wash.
Hills says he knows women hear “man”cation and roll their eyes. “Well, why do guys need vacations? You know, women are all stressed at the house and need a break from some things. But the reality is, us guys, we work our butts off too,” says Hills.
And while he knows a lot of guys can’t justify going on a “man”cation when the funds aren’t there for a family vacation, he says often a “man”cation can involve a simple camping trip with good friends, sharing expenses.
