Detroit Water Customers Receive Bogus Shut Off Notice

DETROIT (WWJ) - Hundreds of Detroiters received water shut off notices in error for an account that wasn't theirs.

Mary Sevakis, with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, told WWJ Newsradio 950 the residents received letters indicating they were behind $900, and that if they didn't pay the bill, their service would be shut off.

"Once we realized that multiple calls were coming in regarding this complaint, we checked our system and it is a software malfunction, which we are addressing as an urgent matter," she said.

"We have suspended further mailing of the shut off notices until the mailing is corrected," said Sevakis.

Sevakis said if anyone receives this letter, it should be disregarded.

Anyone who has already paid this bill or who has questions is asked to contact Customer Service at (313) 267-8000.
