Woman's Torso Found In Suitcase In Gibraltar

UPDATE: Authorities tentatively have identified the remains.

GIBRALTAR (WWJ) - Homicide investigators are looking for clues after part of a woman's body was found in the town of Gibraltar in southern Wayne County.

A woman's torso was found inside a suitcase recovered from a creek, near the Bella Vista apartment complex along West Jefferson near Gibraltar Road.

Gibraltar Police Chief Ray Canterbury said they have been searching for evidence since the remains were discovered on Thursday night.

"The brother of a girl who was reported missing on Monday called us, made the report, and she had been missing since Friday. Nobody had seen her since Friday," said Canterbury.

The chief said they won't be able to positively identify the victim until DNA testing is complete. However, neighbors said many believe the torso belongs to the missing woman, who lives in the condo complex.

The chief said it is still early in the investigation and they are questioning several people. "We've talked with several people of interest, we are not ruling anybody out," said Canterbury.

One man told WWJ's Stephanie Davis that neighbors are understandably rattled.

"Everybody's going to have that fear, especially with [the killer] out there, you know, and they don't know who it is ... everybody's just gonna be on alert now," he said.

Anyone who may have information relating to this incident is asked to contact the Gibraltar Police Department at 734-676-3900 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
