'Smiling In Detroit' About Free Braces

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - A Southfield orthodontist is saying "thank you" to the community by providing free sets of braces for area charities and organizations.

The braces, valued at $7,000 dollars each, are being made available to patients in need under the "Smiling in Detroit" campaign.

The first of 56 patients were being fitted this week with braces at the practice of Dr. J. Victor Eagan. His father was the first African-American dentist to begin practicing in Detroit 56 years ago.

"Detroit has been so wonderful to our family," said Dr. Eagan, between patients at his office."For us to give back to our family is part of our hearts."

Cathy Armbruster of Waterford is part of Big Brothers Big sisters that helped a Pontiac girl be fit for braces. "She's so excited about it ... this wonderful gift, so totally unexpected," Armbruster said.

More patients are being sought through charities and community groups.
